Extra Ciricular Assignment

1. On your blog post your reactions to what you read and what you saw. How about 3-4 sentences.
I am impressed with Brandt's many talents and how quickly he could transition between film directing and photography. I find it interesting that his photos can capture the soul of Africa's wild animals with his use of contrast and placing. His photos are very dramatic and I enjoy their simplicity.

2. Do a google image search for Nick Brandt, find your favorite photo and post it on your blog.

I think this is one of my favourite photographs, let alone it being one of Brandt's. (3) This black and white picture is very soft and exotic looking. The mist from the photo gives the image a 'glazed over' look, while the rocks up close and the trees in the distance add some sharpness. (4) The most obvious composition of photography present in this photograph are lines. It is important to incorporate lines into most photos, and Brandt has done that in a landscape photo, which can be tricky sometimes. As we can see, the rocks and the coast of the bay create an S-curve, which is almost always aesthetically pleasing to the human eye. Our eyes naturally follow that line, which not only gives the photo a sense of direction; but also a sense of depth, and in this case texture is also present within the line. Another element of photography depicted here is the rule of thirds. Picture a 4x3 grid on the photograph, and we will see that all the 'action' is happening in the corners and the sides, not the middle. Placing the focal point(s) of the photograph in the centre often makes for a static image. This photo is a great example: the line doesn't cross the middle of the picture, the biggest trees are not centred, and that one rock inside the "pool" is off centred too.

5. What type of camera lens does he use and why is this important?
Brandt does not use a standard telephoto lens. He actually gets up close with the animals he is photographing. This is important because it further translates Brandt's idea of capturing the soul of animals because he is getting up close and personal with them.

6. What is his reason for taking these photos?
Brandt captures the spirit and soul of Africa and its wildlife. He is also an animal life activist and nature preservationist.

7. What is his hope by taking these type of photos?
Brandt wants to show animals as spirits in distress. He preserves nature and respects wildlife at high levels.

8. What does Nick Brandt have to say on Africa?
"[Africa] [is] an extraordinary, beautiful natural world... that is rapidly disappearing before our eyes."
-Brandt, Nick

9. What is Brandt's newest focus with his photography?
So many animals are going extinct, and most people do nothing about it. Brandt displays his sympathy for animals and unspoken anger on the topics of animal extinction and environmental devastation.

10. What was the process he did to create these new images?

Brandt took his unpublished images and printed them off in California. He then shipped them of to Kenya and constructed their frames on site, and position them so that they look like a part of the environment.

11. What effect do you think his work might have?
Brandt potentially 'woke up' the people who saw the photographs to the topics of animal extinction and environmental devastation in their area.

12. How did these new images make you feel? Describe the emotions you felt as you scrolled through them.
It makes me sad that future generations might not know what lions or elephants are. At the rate we are going at, many animals will go extinct before the next generation will even see them. I'm very disappointed in myself; and of course I thought about this issue before, but never really took it into consideration or thought of going into deep analysis.

1. Tell me which amusement park featured in the two articles that you would like to visit and take your camera along and what about that park made you want to go there. Write at least a paragraph.

Prompt Shoot II

Prompt Shoot #2 PURPLE This was the brightest I could get this photo because I took it in a dark corner. I did have to turn the ISO up quite a bit, which resulted in some grain, but not too much. The cable creates a nice S-curve  and the baseboards make decently straight lines. I made sure to keep it as simple as possible. This photo is 'purple' because the wall in the background is a calming cool toned purple. ELECTRIC   I wanted this photograph to be underexposed so that the pink looks rich. The darkness also fits the sleepy mood of the styrofoam heads. The heads and the desk that they are on create nice diagonal lines , and everything is well balanced. This photo is 'electric' because the cherry pink wig is prominent as opposed to all other elements in this photograph. COLD This photograph is perfectly exposed in my opinion. A lot of light was seeping through the window because it was mid-day. The rule of thirds is implied in this photo, as well as lin...

"The Camera History and Basic Functions"

"The Camera History and Basic Functions" 1. Explain the “camera obscura” effect. How is it achieved? In c. 500 B.C.E, Chinese and Greek philosophers discovered the "camera  obscure" effect. They found that when light is focused through a tiny hole in a wall, the scene is projects on another close by surface, upside down. 2. What invention during the 17th Century helped man get a step closer to creating the modern camera? Once Isaac newton and Christian Huygens perfected optics, they were able to make extremely high-quality lenses. 3. What were the parts of the first modern camera invented by Niepce? Niepce created the film camera. To body of the camera was a box, it also had a glass lens, and film. 4.  What do modern digital cameras have in common with Niepce’s camera? Light passes through the lens into the camera and exposes the film 5. What do digital cameras use to capture an image? Digital cameras use an electro...
