"the greatest medium for capturing a person’s character is through photography"
Ashley Beolens gives us useful portrait photpgraphy tricks. It is important to note that portraits should resemble the person’s essence" instead of "how they look" (Boens, How to Take Grat Portraits). Lighting and composition play a part in determining the energy a photograph emitts. By reading this short article, I have aqcuired some useful portrait photography tips: essence over aesthetics, and shoot wherever seems natural to the subject.
Favourite photograph:
Dijon Bowen photographs a strong, powerful woman. The subject's windblown hair and the shallow depth of field creates a dramatic feel, and the lines in the background add visual interest. The contrast between the whites and blacks on her shirt are satisfying, and not only is the image perfectly exposed, it is well balanced.

"SUSSMAN[s]... RESEARCH PROJECT IS CLOSELY RELATED TO THE RESEARCH OF A SCIENTIST"
Rachel Sussman displays her photography project in which she photographs the ancient items of nature, over 2,000 years old. Having resarched with bioligists since 2004, Sussman is very keen of nature.
Favourite Photograph:
Rachel Sussman photographs a 2000 year old brain canal in the waters of Speyside, Tobago. I chose this photo because I think it is incredible that someting so ancient can seem so bold and in tact. This image is well exposed, which is impressive considering the fact that Sussman is underwater. All the colours are in good contrast with each other, and I quite enjoy how smooth the picure looks.

This has to be one of my favourite photographs of all time. I love how dark the image seems and how it reminds me of winter. This is a very well executed photo because the white trees run off into the horizon, the reflection adds visual interest, and the tree on the right is in the perfect spot.

Christian Richer photographs abandoned staircases. Having grown up in East Germany. Richer states that he'd always been around abandoned buildings and whatnot, as they were in his area.
Favourite Photograph:
I chose this photo because I like how the "eye" of the stairwell looks. Richer includes the rule of lines, balance, and rule of thirds in this picture.
