Aperture, Shutter Speed and ISO- What do They Do?

Aperture         1. What part of the body should we closely relate aperture? The pupil is closely related to aperture because it controls how much light we receive.         2. Finish this sentence - the smaller the Aperture _____________, the higher the        A perture ________________. The smaller the aperture, the less light is let in , the higher the aperture, the more light is let in .         3. In your own words tell me how aperture impacts Depth of Field? With a small aperture, the entire image is sharp and a deep sense of depth is created. With a large aperture comes a large amount of background blur. Great Black and White Photographers pt 3

q.1) Why do I like Eugene Atget's photographs? I am fond of the warmth and simplicity within Atget's photographs. My favorite picture of his is Versailles, Parc 1901 , as depicted below. His images look soft and glazed over, which appeals to me. The statue looks smooth, and the harsh contrast between her and the hedge still looks soft in spite of the dramatic colour difference. q.1) I see) If I were present when this photograph was a taken, I would see the beautiful colors of le parc du chateau de versailles . I'd see the detail in the statue, and would definitely be impressed. Seeing the leaves of the hedge blow in the wind would be a beautiful sight. q.2) I hear) I would hear the leaves of the hedge blow in the wind. That combined with the sound of the magnificent yet simplistic fountains would be very serene. q.3) I smell) The smell of fresh air would radiate tranquillity. The scent of freshly cut grass and fresh air would waft through the whole park. q.4)...

Great Black and White Photographers pt.2: Biography of Eugene Atget

Biography of Eugene Atget         Few things are known about famous French photographer, Eugene Atget despite his popularity  in the Late 1890's. Eugene spent the first years of his life in Provence, but after the Napoleonic wars,  Agtet and his family moved to the Dordogne River region. His father, Jean-Eugene Agtet passed  away during a business trip in 1962 when Eugene was only five years of age. Soon after his father's  passing; his mother, Clara-Adeline perished. The causes of their deaths are uncertain.         Eugene's works were all photographed in the city of Paris. He described himself as a  “Creator  and Purveyor of a Collection of Photograph Views of Old Paris,” as described on his business card.  He rarely did work for commercial companies, and almost never sold his "bad" photographs.          It seems Agtet's focus was ...

Photo Manipulation and Ethics

Photo Manipulation and Ethics A. What are some of the main points you read about in the website above regarding manipulating images? It is okay to manipulate photographs to a certain extent, depending on the scenario. For photojournalism, it is unethical to alter the colors of an image completely. For photographs in magazine catalogs, it is unethical to alter the appearance of the subject. However, if someone were to photoshop an image for an art project, they could manipulate the image however much they want. B. What is the philosophy of newspapers like the Washington Post and the New York times regarding image manipulation? Newspapers like the Washington Post and the New York Times believe that   “No colors [should] be altered from the original scene...."  and all photographers are required to  turn in "all... their proofs..." and their "final portfolio in order for their photographs to be used" or make the fina...

ACADEMIC SHOOT CRITUQUE

Academic Shoot Reflection and Critique         At first, I had a hard time going into peoples' classrooms because I am very shy, and I didn't want to bother them. While I was shooting, I found myself to be thinking more about framing instead of focusing my camera. If I were to redo this assignment, I would pay more attention to how in-focsu my camera is, because worst case scenario it can be cropped and manipulated in photoshop. How ever, I would not change how my photographs were framed; but I would be less shy and actually go into a classroom.          In photography, I think the easiest rule to achieves the rule of thirds because all you have to do is picture an imaginary grid and place your objects within the squares. I am not unclear with any rules, but I'm not the best at avoiding mergers.

ACADEMIC SHOOT REFLECTION

CHOOSING A BOOK In this photograph, I demonstrate the rule of balance. The subject in this image is the student. I think it is somewhat clear that the subject in this image is the student, but  it could also be the books. I should have had her more in focus. CONVERSATION AMONGST WORLD HISTORY STUDENTS I think this photo is framed well. The Subjects in this image are the two boys in the blue plaid and red, grey, and black hoodie. I do not think it is very clear who the subjects are because of the side angle this photo was taken at, so I should have taken it from a different angle. PEER REFLECTION This image depicts simplicity. I think it is clear that the subject is the girl wearing the dark blue flannel and the girl in the black shirt because they are the most in-focus.  WORKING LIBRARIAN  This photograph demonstrates the rule of thirds. There is not much going on in the centre of the image. It is clear that the subject is the librar...

Academic Shoot Preview

Academic Shoot Preview "Best Story"         This photographer captures an image of a football player hugging his coach. I imagine the player has just participated in his last football game of high school, or they won a very important game. He is probably shedding tears of sadness and joy if he just played his last game, because he could be happy to graduate but upset he is leaving the school. Most of his memories were probably made during high school, and it must be hard to just "leave" all of a sudden. Ultimately you carry your memories with you once high school is over. "Action and Emotion"         These six girls on the volley ball court are very excited because they have probably won a big game. I can tell they have won because all of them look very excited, they are out of position, and they're jumping up and down. The audience on the opposite side of the net do not seem excited, they are clearly disappointed that their school lost the ga...

Alternative to 9/11 Assignment: Photos in Nature

Guidelines for Better Photographic Composition: Simplicity  This photograph is very minimalistic. The main focus of the image are the two birds perched on a roof. The rule of simplicity can be used to draw attention to a specific point in an image. Guidelines for Better Photographic Composition:  Rule of Thirds  This photograph demonstrated the "rule of thirds" well. Framing objects in the middle of a picture often makes for a very static image, but by plotting things near the intersection points of an imaginary  2x4 grid makes for a more pleasing image. Guidelines for Better Photographic Composition:  Lines The s-curve is often incorporated into photographs so our eyes can follow them to the subject. The photographer has his/her model stand in a blank space, and his dark clothes contrast well with the lights and shadows so he is easy to spot. Guidelines for Better Photographic Composition:  Balance In ...

Prompt Shoot #1

METAL This photo and the following one symbolize "metal." Metal can be associated with anger and fear, which are two emotions the sculpture expresses. The light coming from the left gives the picture a sense of motion, it seems like it is pushing the prop forwards and to the right. I dislike the black blob in the bottom right corner, and would move it if I were to retake this image.  METAL 2 The prop looks into the distance but not at the camera, which makes for an interesting image. This picture would be very static if it wasn't for the Dutch angle. I should have taken the photo from a higher angle to make the overall feel of the picture more dramatic, which would better display "metal."  BOWIE A lot of kids eat lunch at these tables, and of course the kids that sit there go to Bowie. The shadows from the two chairs look messy, so I should have taken the photo from a different angle to achieve a cleaner effect. My camera has a setting where I can...
